Catalogue Note

This dramatic photo was taken at Miss Kusama's studio in downtown Tokyo on November 25, 1998.  Kusama accepted Watanabe's request to photograph her very graciously, and when Watanabe arrived, she found Kusama waiting rather impatiently, clad in a crimson robe as if in a fairy-tale setting.  Watanabe asked Kusama to stand amidst her pumpkins.  After shooting sixteen frames of 35 mm film, Watanabe's camera stopped functioning.  Watanabe took this unexpected incident as a sign that Kusama was telling her the session was over.  Curiously, Kusama uttered not a single word, although she appeared quite content.
