Catalogue Note

Thomas Downing and Howard Mehring both studied under Kenneth Noland in the mid 1950s at Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Remaining in the Washington area after their graduation and sharing a studio, in 1959 they helped to found Origo Gallery, an artist's co-operative.  While closely connected to the Washington Color School, their work became more hard-edged and geometric, concentrating on the relationships between color, form and space.  Examples of their work were included in Clement Greenberg's ground-breaking 1964 travelling exhibition Post-Painterly Abstraction, exposing them to a broader, national audience.
