"What immediately comes to mind when I think of the tropics and the tropical being is an image of beauty, sensuality and primitivism. That is a vision that enchants me; it's pure fantasy, dream, or desire for unknown pleasure. Gaugin made the voyage to seek out "paradise lost" and he brought these elements into his paintings. The Brazilian modernist project did the reverse: it nourished itself with European art in order to disseminate it in the tropics.
