The following four cut-out paper collages, executed over almost a decade, demonstrate Chillida’s probing examination of spatiality. The seeming simplicity of the each composition and its monochromatic colouring provide a perfect platform for his analysis of space and form. With their richly textured collaged surfaces, these works appear almost sculptural. Three works from this group were included in the artist’s first major retrospective in 1974 in the Chateau de Ratilly in Bourgogne, residence of Jeanne and Robert Pierlot. This impressive feudal castle offered the perfect environment in which to exhibit Chillida’s collages and sculptures.
