Catalogue Note

The Glove of Buddha is based on a Buddhist hand gesture that signifies protection.  By wrapping this religiously charged hand sculpture with inexpensive and highly ornamental adornments, Noh Sang-Kyoon releases the sculpture from the religious realm, lending it an air of pop culture or nostalgic fondness. Sequins have been Noh's primary motif since 1992; he originally used them to represent fish scales, as a statement about death and anonymity inspired by his own experience of near-drowning as a child.
