Catalogue Note

Kim Dokyun manages to capture the uncanny surfaces and spaces of architecture, whether it is in the midst of an urban environment or a desolate factory found off the side of an expressway. Kim shoots buildings found in Korea, Germany (where he is currently a student), and cities throughout Europe. In this photograph, what appear to be the entrance portals and the corner towers of a Gothic cathedral transform into a series of rugged planes and folds that seem to mimic each other and form an alternate dimension of mirrors. There is an element of the paranormal in his works, as his usage of unnatural lighting and unusual angles brings out the stranger side of architectural structures with otherwise common appearances.
