Catalogue Note

Liu Dahong was among the 1985 New Wave Chinese radical artists. Since the late 1980s he has concentrated on the Mao era and its role as the foundation of China’s myth of modernity.  Using historical settings and cultural iconography, Liu has set the protagonists of the Cultural Revolution in the roles of religious or mythical figures.  This painting plays on the name of Zhou Zhuang Village to hint at the mistaken identity of Premier Zhou Enlai’s hometown.
