Catalogue Note

Wang Chuan was among the first handful of students admitted to art academy after the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976 and made his reputation with paintings that became well known in the “Wounded Art” movement.  In the mid-1980s Wang became a pioneer in experiments in non-representational ink painting, having arrived at this through his interest in metaphysics.  He is also one of the few artists to have persisted in this genre through two decades.  In 1995 Wang was diagnosed with cancer and he claimed that concentration on his art helped him through the trauma.  Wang is recognized as a leading painter in this field and is represented in most major ink painting exhibitions in China.
