A singing bird automaton timepiece, French, circa 1885

  • 61cm. 2ft high
the timepiece with 3-inch enamel dial and eight-day pendulum movement contained in a simulated mossy bank from which rises a flowering tree with four brightly feathered birds, when the automaton mechanism in the base is released the bird at the top of the tree rocks back and forth while a small bird at the centre flits from one branch to another swivelling as it moves, at the base of the tree another bird dips its beak into a pool fed by a revolving glass waterfall rod, the movements accompanied by cheeping bird song,  deep ebonised base with control to the side and covered by a replaced glass dome
