Catalogue Note

"The Paternalism series is, in fact, the visual presentation of the artist's reflection over social issues. While the hardship of life and the reason behind it is a frequent encounter for him, in most cases, Mao Xuhui chose to put personal sufferings into a grand social background to look at.

The Scissors series is an extension of the Paternalism series. The transformation of subject matter took place in 1994. According to the artist, Paternalism focuses on the issue of power, and the scissor, an everyday commodity, is here to materialize the strength of power and its omnipresence. So as it is in our daily life. 'Sometimes I use the scissor as a bizarre icon, to deploy it in a collage of various real life scenes, in order to express my anger and uneasiness of some sort'."
