Description

  • Carlo Giuliano
The 15th century hessonite garnet bead carved in the round with the head of a man, mounted in gold as a stickpin, the collar decorated with filigree, signed C.G.

Provenance

An American Institution, sold by Christie's Geneva, November 15, 1972, lot 426.

Exhibited

Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the Nineteenth Century, Wartski, London, March 1984, no. 58.

Literature

Geoffrey C. Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th Century, pl. 35.

The bead in the stickpin offered here is a fine example of fifteenth century gem carving. Its rarity and the skill of the carving was undoubtedly recognized by Giuliano. See Munn, ibid, p. 40, no. 35.
