Catalogue Note

The initials E.C.B. on the box are for Clara Bell, the original owner of the necklace, and the sister of Sir Edward Poynter.  Her son C.F. Bell was Keeper of Fine Arts at the Ashmoleon Museum.

Another necklace of candy twist links is illustrated by  Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, pl. 152. This design originated around 1891 when one of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting ordered for her wedding a pendant  to match an Italian 16th century enameled chain interspersed with pearls that was in her possession. Giuliano's commission was so successful that the candy-twist design became a part of the firm's repertoire. See Munn (ibid)  p. 120.
