Catalogue Note
A Russian Orthodox cross made by John Brogden, circa 1870, is illustrated in The Art of the Jeweller, A Catalogue of the Hull Grundy Gift to the British Museum, Vol. 1, p. 166, no. 1003 and Vol. II, p. 273, no. 1003. The design is derived from a common type of Russian cross dating from the 16th and 17th century.
Another example of a similar cross is found in the exhibition Objects of Desire, 500 Years of Jewelry, the Newark Museum, May 3 through February 18, 2007, 'Faith and Fashion', no. 2.
