Description
The dish of quatrefoil shape decorated in repoussé with a Noh mask, 3 5/8 by 4 3/8 inches, signed with London hallmarks for 1881, maker's mark L.D., and inscribed Guiliano (sic) 115 Piccadilly.
Exhibited
Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the Nineteenth Century, Wartski, London, March 1984, no. 15.1
Literature
Geoffrey C. Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th Century, pl. 143.
The face on the dish appears to derive from a Japanese mask used in Noh theater performances and is a rare example of the influence of oriental art on Giuliano's work.
