Description
- Carlo Giuliano
Comprising a pendant and a pair of earrings, designed as naiads playing at the source of a river, the bodies enameled en ronde bosse, the streams of water represented by fringes of cushion-shaped and rose-cut diamonds terminating in pearls, unsigned. With original fitted case.
Catalogue Note
Prior to opening his own premises at 115 Picadilly in 1874, Giuliano had considerable success in London and was a supplier to several well-known retailers. One of these was Harry Emanuel under whose auspice Giuliano's work was shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. At this time Giuliano would appear to have been inspired by Renaissance prototypes and produced a number of jewels featuring human and mythical figures in the round. See Munn, Castellani and Giuliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th Century, p. 86 and pls. 61, 62 and 64.
Although unsigned, the original fitted case for this lot case bears traces of Emanuel's stamp on the satin.
See the footnote to lot 150.
