Catalogue Note
The design of this brooch is unusual in that it is intended to be worn as a square rather than a lozenge. It is interesting to note that a source for the design can be found in European Architecture by Nicholas Pevsner, which shows a sketch for a projected chapel for the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan, by Antolio Filarete, circa 1455, echoing a very similar pattern of squares and circles.
