Description

  • Castellani
The graduated necklace composed of gold beads applied with filigree decoration, alternating with beads of lapis lazuli, the center suspending a lapis crescent with a gold amphora pendant, length 17 inches. With original fitted velvet case stamped Castellani on the lid in Greek letters. 



Original cases by Castellani are exceedingly rare and the only one in this collection accompanies the present lot.

This necklace is similar in style to an example datable to the 1st Century A.D. found near Damascus, now in the British Museum. See the Catalogue of Jewellery, Greek, Roman and Etruscan in the Department of Antiquities in the British Museum, F.H. Marshall, no. 2718.
