Description
- Carlo Giuliano
Supporting 14 ancient Greek gold coins, comprising 9 staters of Phillip II of Macedon (359-336 BC) and 5 staters of Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) alternating with gold beads on a necklace of reeded cylincrical links, length 15 inches, signed C.G.
Catalogue Note
Although it is not unusual to find ancient coins in Revivalist jewels, the necklace here is likely to be the most important recorded example of its kind made by Giuliano. Given the fine quality of the coins which span the reigns of Philip II and Alexander III (Alexander the Great) the necklace was probably constructed at the request of an accomplished collector of coins or antiquities. Only one of the coins is drilled.
