A Ninghsia carpet, West China,

The field pattern of this carpet is filled with the longevity design, a  lattice composed of rows of 'four-cloud' motifs.  Of the 25 known Ninghsia carpets from this period with the longevity pattern, only six have a medallion in the center.  The lobed and pinched central medallion here appears as if it is overlaid on top of the field pattern as the latter disappears beneath it.  Two confronting foliated dragons form a circular central medallion within the lobed cartouche.  Each of the four corners has a quarter medallion with a geometric dragon fret.  The primary border has a swastika fret pattern in blue against a faded red background while the outer frame is brown.
