A Senna rug, Northwest Persia,

Probably made on commission for an Ottoman official or dignitary, with its depiction of various military accoutrements, flags (the red, the Ottoman Empire and the green, probably for Bosnia) and orders, centred on a tughra, possibly intended to be that of Abdülhamid II (1876-1909). The scales support two books entitled 'The Book of Rights' and 'The Book of Compassion', the inscriptions in the various orders themselves are illegible; of the orders, the second from left is almost certainly intended to represent the The Osmanie Order, (Order of the Ottoman Empire), founded in 1861 and that second from right, possibly the Order of the Medjidie. The inscription in the lower half of the field reads: 'The year 1309 (AD 1891-2).
