Catalogue Note

The present watercolour is based on sketches made on Callow's only recorded trip to Holland in the summer of 1845. Rotterdam was the first stop on his tour and he arrived by steamer. A watercolour sketch of this view dated 4th September 1845 is in the collection of Birmingham City Museum and Art gallery (see Jan Reynolds, William Callow, 1980, pl. 41)
