Catalogue Note
The present watercolour is one of a series of seven executed by Turner for Lieutenant George Francis White's Views in India, chiefly among the Himalaya Mountains. Further examples of this series can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland, Leeds City Art Gallery and Blackburn Art Gallery.
Turner's watercolours are based on sketches by White, who served in the 13th Regiment of Foot in India from 1825 until 1846. The subsequent publication was issued in 1836-7 and proving popular with a total of thirty illustrations. Included alongside those by Turner were engravings after Clarkson Stanfield, David Roberts and Charles Bentley.
The Valley of the Dhoon lies in the Shiwalik hills in the province of Uttaranchal, Northern India.
