Catalogue Note
This watercolour once formed part of the celebrated collection of Turner's watercolours belonging to John Edward Taylor (1830-1905). Taylor also numbered the `Blue' Rigi and the `Red' Rigi amongst his magnificent group of Turner watercolours.
This view is taken from above the town of Lucerne looking across the lake towards the distinctive shape of the Rigi (or Righi). One of his favorite subjects later in life, Turner came to Lucerne to stay at the Schwann hotel on the lake front. Making this trip annually during the 1840's, during this time Turner painted some of his most serene and transcendent watercolours.
Larger than the regular roll sketch books which Turner used in Switzerland or adjacent Alpine regions between 1841 and 1844, this works is almost exactly the same size as other individual Swiss works including; The Rigi, Lake Lucerne, The Sunset; Lake Thun: the Neissen, and Thun (see A. Wilton, The Life and Work of J.M.W. Turner, 1979, nos. 1472, 1503, 1504 respectively).
