Catalogue Note
For much of his life James Holland was based in Greenwich, London. However he did travel, and in 1835 he was in Italy. The present work depicts the imposing gothic tombs of the Scaliger family, which adjoins the twelth century Church of Santa Maria Antica, Verona. The family ruled Verona in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and were undoubtedly great patrons of the arts.
