Catalogue Note
Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century Rome was a most popular destination for British travellers. Cromek, who had been born in London, spent eighteen years in Rome between 1831 and 1849. While there he achieved great success as a landscape and topographical painter. The present lot, with it's bold and bright colours and large scale, is a good example of the type of work that might have attracted the tourists who came to the Eternal City.
