Catalogue Note
George Barret was born in Dublin in 1732. By the early 1760's he had moved to London and by 1768 he had become a Foundation Member of the R.A. Throughout his career he conducted several tours around Britain, and he is known to have painted a number of works both in bodycolour and oil of Melrose for Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleugh. Two oils of Melrose Abbey remain in the Buccleugh family collection, while a third was exhibited by Barret at the first Royal Academy exhibition in 1769.
