Catalogue Note
The market town of Crowland lies on the southern border of Lincolnshire, about eight miles from Peterborough. It is particularly well known for two landmarks: it's Abbey and the so-called Trinity Bridge, which is depicted in the present work. The bridge, built between 1360 and 1390, is unique for it has three arches supporting one over-arching structure.
Peter de Wint's wife's family originated from Lincoln and he painted that city and its surrounding area many times throughout his career. The present work is dated 1832. De Wint is known to have been painting at Crowland around that date, and exhibited a work entitled A Distant View of Crowland Abbey in 1833 at the Society of Painters in Water Colour, no.89.
