he with powdered hair en queue, wearing a blue coat, yellow waistcoat and a pleated jabot, sky background, within a plaited hair border, the reverse a portrait of his mother-in-law: Mrs Joshua Smith by Mrs Anne Mee circa 1795, with powdered and curled hair, wearing a white gown, sky background, gold frame; and another miniature of his wife Maria, Marchioness of Northampton, circa 1795, with powered and piled hair, wearing a white dress, cloud and sky background, cracked, gold frame, glazed hair reverse

Catalogue Note

Charles Compton, son on the 8th Earl of Northampton, was born in 1760. He inherited his father’s earldom in 1796 and on the 7th September 1812 he was created 1st Marquess of Northampton.  Educated at Trinity College Cambridge, he graduated in 1779, and from 1784 to 1796 he served as M.P for Northampton. In 1800 he became the President of the Geological Society, a post which he held for two years. He died at Dresden in May 1828.
