Catalogue Note
The present work is one of a number of copies Churchill was known to have made from Daubigny’s painting Le Passeur de l’Oise of 1864. The Daubigny painting belonged to Churchill’s cousin Sunny, the 9th Duke of Marlborough, before it was sold at auction in 1924. Churchill would have seen the painting at Blenheim Palace, his birth place and the house where he was a regular visitor during his lifetime.
