Catalogue Note
The present work is likely to be one of a number of 'Sketches in Oil' Leech exhibited at the Egyptian Hall near Piccadilly. The anticedent to the current work was an illustration published in Punch on 12 February 1859, the full title for which was printed beneath. This work displays the elements of comedy and satire which are so characteristic of Leech's style and seen most acutely in his political cartoons.
