Catalogue Note
The sitter was the fourth son of Charles, 10th Lord Elphinstone, and his wife, Clementina, the daughter of the 6th Earl of Wigton. In 1793 he served as Commander of the Robust, successfully defeating Napoleon’s fleet. This portrait derives from the work by Saunders in the National Maritime Museum.
