Catalogue Note

Hugh Goldwin Riviere  was the son of the animal painter Briton Riviere. He primarily painted portraits, for which he was elected into the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many literary subjects including illustrating lines from Christina Rossetti and Tennyson. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1893 and 1904, living in London before moving to Midhurst, Sussex.
