Catalogue Note

Lambert's eldest son, Maurice, was the model for a number of the artist's major paintings, including Holiday in Essex of 1910. A portrait from 1913 is now in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and another, of Maurice as The Half-Back ,1920, is in the Art Gallery of South Australia. This smaller, informal work was once part of a large family group, still unfinished when it was included in Lambert's Memorial Exhibition. A portrait of Lambert's wife Amy and a still life also survive from the original composition.

Maurice Lambert (1901-64) became a successful sculptor.

We are most grateful for assistance in cataloguing this work from Dr Anna Gray of the National Gallery of Australia, who is working towards a major exhibition of George Lambert's art to open in July 2007.
