Catalogue Note

This exquisite 'colour note' relates closely to Gruner's larger After the Rain, 1917, also formerly in the possession of Robert Charles Dunlop Elliot (known as 'R. D.'), businessman, newspaper proprietor and a major collector of the artist's work.1 Elliott was a long-serving trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. He was married to Hilda, daughter of Theodore Fink, and their collection included works by Degas, Frank Brangwyn and William Orpen.

We are most grateful for assistance in cataloguing this work from Steven Miller, Librarian at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who is compiling a catalogue raisonnĂ© of  Gruner's paintings.
