Catalogue Note

In what appears to be the original giltwood and gesso frame.  The canvas has an old, circa 1840 relining, and bears the suppliers stamp:  Prepared by O. Stearns, Boston.

The canvas stamp is that of O. Stearns (Oliver Stearns) who worked as a supplier in Boston in the 1840’s.  (See Alexander Katlan, American Artists’ Material Suppliers Directory, Vol. 1, (1987), p. 456, fig.15); the stamp dated 1848.  The portrait dates significantly earlier, suggesting that the portrait was more likely relined circa 1848, and of Boston-area ownership.  Based on the style of the clothing, the date would be in the late 1780s or early 1790s.
