Catalogue Note
Ronald G. Pisano wrote: "The subject, Moorish or Arabic, as well as the style and palette suggest a date of circa 1881. Chase began painting such subjects while still a student at the Royal Academy in Munich. By 1879, he was exhibiting similar subjects in other media in America, and his special interest in such a theme was undoubtedly reinforced by his passion for the work of Mariano Fortuny y Carbo in the early 1880s. Furthermore, Chase made several trips to Spain the summers of 1881, 1882 and 1883, which probably inspired several pastels in which he used Arab subjects."
