Catalogue Note
Rachel M. Hawks, a native of Maryland, studied at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore and at the Rinehart School of Sculpture under the tutelage of Ephraim Keyser and Charles Pike.
The present work, one of several examples of the artist's garden statuary, was cast by the Gargani Brothers, founders in Brooklyn, New York. The Gorham Bronze Foundry contracted Gargani to do all of their lost wax casts from 1929-1934.
