Catalogue Note

Guirand de Scévola studied under Cormon and Pierre Dupuis and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français between 1889 and 1897. After 1902 he exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1905 and 1906 at the Salon d'Automne. He was inspired by the Italian Renaissance and the Pre-Raphaelites and his idealised portraits became very popular. His use of symbolism and vision of feminine beauty had affinities with those of Gustave Moreau and Edgard Maxence.
