Edgard Maxence took his subjects from medieval and legendary sources much like the Pre-Raphaelites. He studied under Elie Delaunay and Gustave Moreau and exhibited at the Salon de la Rose Croix between 1895 and 1897 as well as achieving considerable success at other Salons.
