Catalogue Note

The complete set was published by Vasi from 1747 to 1761. Since the set was published just before the wave of neoclassicism transformed the city, the plates (grouped by subject: churches, gates, bridges, palaces, villas), essentially depicts the Baroque Rome. The present series published in 1759 mainly illustrates colleges, hospitals and many other pious buildings. Vasi was 'an important contributor to European perceptions of contemporary Rome, and the development of the techniques and subtleties of intaglio printmaking.' (Riba)
