Description

  • 82cm. high, 112cm. wide, 56cm. deep; 2ft. 8¼in., 3ft. 4in., 1ft. 10in.
of bombé form, with a moulded veined mottled peach, grey and white marble top, above two drawers, on cabriole legs terminating in gilt-bronze sabots, the lacquer decorated with figures in landscapes and riding elephants, with later gilt-bronze rocaille mounts throughout; marble top restored; partly relacquered

Jacques Dubois:
Jacques Dubois (1693-1763), received Master 1742, was one of the most important ébénistes of the Louis XV period. His furniture was of outstanding quality and he produced luxury furniture in the main comprising commodes, secrétaires and bureaux in Chinese and Japanese lacquer. Upon his death in 1763, the inventory reveals a number of sumptuous pieces in Chinese or Japanese lacquer including' one commode 4 ½ pieds in length in Chinese lacquer decorated a grands cartels' (with large bronze mounts).
