Catalogue Note

The composition derives from an original of 1637 by Willem Claesz. Heda now in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp (see Vroom, under Literature, vol.I, p.73, fig. 90).  Many variants and copies are known, variously attributed to Gerrit Willemsz. Heda or Cornelis Mahu.  A signed version by Gerrit Willemsz. was offered London, Sotheby's, 8 December 1993, lot 286.

On the basis of photographs Fred G. Meijer believes this painting to be a characteristic work of Cornelis Mahu.
