Catalogue Note

A larger version of this painting is in the Musée nationale du chateau de Versailles  (RF 531) for which a preparatory watercolour was exhibited at the Salon of 1878 (no. 3911). Thiers made his famous speech in the Salle d'Assemblée at Versailles, described thus in the Salon catalogue: "[Thiers]: "The National Assembly has returned peace to France and liberated her territories" At these words, more than three hundred supporters from the left arose, hands raised up to Thiers, and cried in unison: "Our liberator! Our liberator!"
