Catalogue Note

A pupil of Regnault, Pauline Auzou, née Desmarquets, is best known for her history paintings, both of ancient Greek and contemporary subjects, and for her "Troubadour" style paintings, emotive genre painting inspired by Dutch 17th century masters of light such as Pieter de Hooch.  She exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1793 and 1817.
