Catalogue Note

Jean Dupas (1882 - 1964), one of France's foremost artists during the Art Deco period, was an accomplished illustrator and painter. A student of Albert Besnard, he was awarded a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes in 1922 and also won the Prix de Rome. He is perhaps best known for his work at the 1925 Paris World Exhibition and the ocean liner Normandie in 1932 for which he designed murals depicting mythological marine subjects, one of which is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
