The present sculpture belongs to a series of seated female figures that can be traced through the 1950s, and may be related to Moore’s first trip to Greece in 1951. The upright armless form, raised on a dais, appears soon after this visit and along with the contemporary sculptures of seated female figures on steps and against walls, gives an unmistakeably classical air to the pieces. They have also been interpreted as representations of a feminine archetype, a theme which was clear in the many variations and ideas that Moore tried in answer to the 1956 commission for a monumental sculpture to be placed outside the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
