Catalogue Note

Phil and Murray Gersh were pioneer talent agents in Hollywood, and their roster of clients reads like a Who’s Who of famous actors, directors, writer and producers, including Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Richard Burton, Billy Wilder, David Niven, James Mason and Stanley Kubrick. Partly under the guidance of their brother in law, Sam Jaffe, the Gersh brothers began collecting modern art in the 1950s, and with Jaffe’s move to London in 1959 they became aware of a number of British artists. In 1989 a large portion of the collection was donated to Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
