Catalogue Note

Sold together with a letter from George Bernard Shaw in which he agrees to sit one last time for a portrait bust by 'My dear Sava'.

The present work is the original bronze from which an edition of eight casts were produced in 1986 by the Fine Art Society. It was shown at the Leicester Galleries exhibition in 1938 alongside a number of other famous literary and political figures including James Joyce, Aldous Huxley and Haile Selassie. An implicit element of caricature invigorates Botzaris' portrait, while his tactile manipulation of the materials gives a lively sense of his sitter's sharp wit.
