Significantly, Interieur avec Forme Blanche was executed in the same year as Autumn Landscape, the artist's submission for the 60 Paintings for '51 exhibition at the Festival of Britain (Coll. Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle), and shares with it considerable similarities in both palette and composition. Having been awarded one of the five Arts Council purchase prizes, a notorious 'unsuitable art' scandal was started in the letter columns of the newspapers and culminated in a Parliamentary question.
