Catalogue Note

Executed in 1942, the work is one of a series of studies for a huge Memorial Panel commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee. The commission brought a long period of inactivity to an end and the studies are infused with both the 'spontaneity and vigour' of a man working at great speed with immense enthusiasm.
